Our Policies

1 . We will make the GOCMV relevant
Is the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria (GOCMV) relevant to the wider Greek Community?

Community Transparency considers this to be the most important question that must be asked when planning the future of the GOCMV.

The GOCMV is at the generational crossroads and Community Transparency will address the issue of relevance without undermining the fundamental principals of our organisation.

2 . We will provide financial stability for the GOCMV
Without doubt, the future financial stability of the GOCMV will affect our ability to deliver relevant programmes to the wider community.

With a net asset holding value that exceeds $100 Million, it is unacceptable that core services are being under-funded and are being threatened with closure unnecessarily.

Community Transparency will return the GOCMV’s budget to surplus with prudent and responsible financial management of the GOCMV’s financial sectors.

3. We will introduce the principle of accountability
Community Transparency will introduce the principle of accountability to the running affairs of the GOCMV.

All major projects requiring significant funding will undergo rigorous independent review.

Community Transparency will not allow outside interests to exploit any resource or asset holdings of the GOCMV.

4. We will regain the GOCMV’s status as the premier advocate for all Greek Australians
Community Transparency will work to regain the GOCMV’s status as the premier advocate for all Greek Australians.

Community Transparency will achieve this by strengthening relationships with key Federal, State and Local Governments and with other key Greek-Australian community organisations and agencies.

Community Transparency will build and strengthen our community’s voice.

5. We will actively seek stronger partnerships with other key Greek Organisations and Agencies
Community Transparency will proactively seek to build relationships with all Greek Organisations and Agencies for the development and benefit of the wider community.

Community Transparency believes that many Greek Organisations and Agencies fulfill a purposeful role in the broader Greek Community and wishes to support their services, not compete with them.

Community Transparency believes “old style political agendas of the past” do not serve the interests of our common constituency.

6. We will invest in our community’s educational future
Community Transparency strongly believes the educational future for our community is not just defined as buildings and equipment.

We believe a successful educational policy includes personnel, strong and relevant curriculum, facilities and an environment which encourages achievement.

Community Transparency will introduce greater scholarship opportunities for academic high achievers and provide them the environment where they can reach their potential.

In addition, there will be greater emphasis on the school’s Greek language and cultural aspects.

The newest of technologies will be introduced in to this sector, which will significantly improve the teaching of the Greek language for the benefit of third generation Greek Australians.

Our educators will be provided better quality professional development programmes, which will better enable them to educate our future generations of Greek Australians.

7. We will redefine the Antipodes Festival to more than a two day party
We consider the Arts to be one of the most important sectors and wish to provide it the support it deserves.

In association with other Arts bodies and interested parties, we will develop a new charter that will reflect the objectives of a genuine artistic body.

Community Transparency’s vision of the Antipodes Festival, is a professionally run calendar of events which will inspire all Greek Australians and impress the broader community with the rich tapestry that is the Greek culture.

8. We will introduce genuine cultural change within the GOCMV
Constitutional reform will be introduced that will both encourage and increase the meaningful participation of women in our organisation.

Community Transparency believes that boards of management should provide for more regular forums for their membership which extends well beyond an Annual General Meeting and General Elections every three years.

More regular contact through quarterly open forums are an opportunity for members to provide feedback to the GOCMV and to ask questions or provide their ideas on how to strengthen our Community.

9. We will introduce Constitutional change to be drafted and will involve all interested groups to ensure its’ adoption.
The current constitution is seriously outdated and lacks appropriate safeguards on matters of conflict of interest.

All three Constitutions (Greek Community, Antipodes Festival and Alphington Grammar School) will be streamlined accordingly.

We will advocate for a new Constitution to be drafted and will involve all interested groups to ensure its’ adoption.

10. We will develop the GOCMV’s presence beyond Lonsdale Street
Lonsdale Street will remain our spiritual home, but to be relevant, we require the courage to look well beyond.

Community Transparency will utilise the $2 million State Government Grant to provide state of the art refurbishments to the existing site and will focus on developing multiple Community Centres around Melbourne.

The Bulleen property which has remained dormant for many years, can be developed in to an exciting opportunity for the wider Greek Community. Detailed plans have been prepared which detail the many services that could be offered on this significant site.

Finally, Community Transparency believes the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria must live up to its name, by providing relevant services to Greek Australians within ALL of the State of Victoria.
